Select text, or draw a box, oval, or freehand marker over anything.

Find & auto-detect

Search a word, or auto-find emails, phone numbers, card numbers, and SSNs.

Metadata stripped

Author, title, and keywords are removed and redacted pages are flattened.

100% private

Everything happens in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.

How to redact a PDF

  1. Add your PDF by dropping it in the box above, or tap to browse.
  2. Select the text you want gone, or draw a box, oval, or freehand marker over it. You can also search for a word or tap Emails, Phone numbers, Card numbers, or SSNs to auto-find them. For a scan, pick the languages under Scanned and tap Read scanned text first.
  3. Review the marked areas, then tap Apply and download to save a redacted PDF with the content removed and the document details stripped.

Everything runs on your device, so the document you are cleaning up is never uploaded, even with no internet once the page has loaded.

Four ways to mark content

  • Select text so marks snap neatly to the words
  • Draw a box, oval, or freehand marker over anything, including images and signatures
  • Find a word or number to mark every match at once
  • Auto-detect emails, phone numbers, card numbers, and SSNs across all pages

Every mark is fully reviewable and editable, and only becomes permanent when you tap Apply and download.

Redaction vs covering: why true removal matters

This is the mistake that leaks documents. Drawing a black rectangle in a viewer, or highlighting text black, only puts a shape on top; the words are still in the file and anyone can move the box, delete it, or copy the hidden text straight out. Real redaction removes the content itself. When you apply here, the text and pixels under each mark are deleted and the page is flattened, so there is nothing left to uncover.

Auto-detect sensitive data

Redacting by hand is slow and easy to get wrong. Open Auto-detect and tap Emails, Phone numbers, Card numbers, or SSNs, and the tool scans every page and marks each match for you. You stay in control: the marks are just proposed, so you review them, add or remove any, and then apply. It is the fast way to clean personal data out of a long document without missing a line.

Redacting a scanned PDF

Scans and photos have no real text for Find or Auto-detect to work with, so the tool can read the words for you first. Pick your languages under Scanned and tap Read scanned text; the reading happens on your device. After that, search and auto-detect work on the scan just like a normal PDF, and every mark you apply still truly removes the pixels underneath.

What happens when you apply

Tapping Apply and download does three things: it removes the content under every mark, flattens each redacted page so nothing can be pulled back out, and strips the document's hidden details such as author, title, and keywords. Pages you did not mark keep their real, selectable text and pass through untouched. The result is a clean file that is safe to share.

Is it private and safe?

Yes. Uploading a document you need to redact to someone else's server is exactly the risk redaction is meant to avoid. This tool never uploads your file, everything is done in your browser, which makes it a safe choice for contracts, medical records, bank statements, and IDs. Because it truly removes content rather than covering it, the downloaded copy is safe to send on.

Common ways people use Redact PDF

  • Blacking out account and card numbers before sharing a statement.
  • Removing names, emails, and phone numbers from a document for privacy.
  • Hiding signatures or personal details on a scanned contract or ID.
  • Cleaning sensitive data out of records before a public or legal filing.
  • Preparing a redacted copy of a report to share more widely.

FAQs about Redact PDF

Do my files get uploaded?

No. Your PDF is redacted right here on your own device, inside the browser. It never leaves your computer, so the private parts stay private.

Is the hidden text really gone?

Yes. On any page you redact, the content under the mark is removed, not just covered. No one can copy it, search it, or pull it out of the saved file.

How can I mark content?

Four ways: select text to snap marks to the words; draw a box, oval, or freehand marker over anything like logos, photos, or signatures; search for a word or number to mark every match; or auto-detect common sensitive data.

What can auto-detect find?

Tap Emails, Phone numbers, Card numbers, or SSNs and it marks every match across all pages for you to review before applying. It all runs on your device.

Can it find text in a scan?

Yes. If your PDF is a scan or photo with no real text, pick the languages under Scanned and tap Read scanned text first. Then Find and Auto-detect work on the scan too.

Is hidden data like the author name removed?

Yes. When you apply, the tool strips the document details, such as author, title, and keywords, and every page you redacted is flattened, so the content beneath the mark is gone.

Why not just cover it with a black box in another app?

Because a black box drawn in most apps only sits on top. Anyone can move it, delete it, or copy the text hidden underneath. This tool actually removes the content, which is the whole point of redaction.

Can I undo before I apply?

Yes. Marks are fully editable until you apply. Move them, delete them, or tap Clear marks to start over. Removal only happens when you tap Apply and download.

Can the redacted content be recovered later?

No. Once you apply and download, the content under each mark is gone from that file and the page is flattened. Keep your original if you might need the full version again.

Are the pages I did not touch changed?

Only in that the document's hidden details are stripped on save. Pages without any marks keep their real, selectable text and are otherwise passed through untouched.

Does it work offline and on a phone?

Yes. Once the page has loaded, everything runs in your browser, so it keeps working with no connection, on iPhone, Android, tablets, and computers.

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark, no size limit. It works the same on phones, tablets, and computers in any modern browser.
